Judge blocks overtime rule, saying DOL exceeded authority

A federal judge in Texas on Friday blocked enforcement of the federal government's overtime rule, determining that the Department of Labor exceeded its authority in increasing the minimum salary for exemption for executive, administrative and professional employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

The rule, which went into effect in July and with the salary threshold that was to increase again Jan. 1, has faced legal challenges from the state of Texas and business groups that were consolidated into a single case.
