The senior living industry is doubling down on its messaging to lawmakers to protect Medicaid, noting that the congressional budget reconciliation process presents “tremendous threats and opportunities” for older adults and providers.
On Tuesday, House Republicans passed a budget bill that takes the first step toward extending the Trump administration’s 2017 tax cuts addressing defense, energy, immigration and tax policy. The House GOP budget framework included $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and $2 trillion in spending cuts, with $880 billion in spending cuts resting with the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees healthcare spending in programs including Medicaid.

As workforce issues continue to be front and center for senior living providers, the industry is backing the reintroduction of legislation that would update a 26-year-old workforce opportunity tax credit aimed at improving workforce hiring and retaining.
The American Seniors Housing Association, Argentum, the American Health Care Association and the Society for Human Resource Management are among the groups that signed onto a Feb. 18 coalition letter supporting the Improve and Enhance the Work Opportunity Tax Credit Act.
HR 1177 / S 492 was introduced by Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-PA) to strengthen the work opportunity tax credit, or WOTC, to help disadvantaged individuals find employment. The WOTC provides a federal tax credit to employers who invest in American workers who face barriers to employment, including eligible veterans, low-income individuals and people with disabilities.
